Kinetic Letters

At our school, we use Kinetic Letters to help children develop confident, fluent and legible handwriting.

Kinetic Letters is a handwriting programme that teaches children how to form letters through movement and memory. Rather than simply copying letters, children learn the correct movements and patterns needed to form each letter accurately.

How does it work?

Children learn letters in groups based on the movements used to form them. They are taught:

  • Where to start each letter
  • The correct movement to form the letter
  • How to develop consistent letter size and formation
  • How letters join as their handwriting develops
  • How to use good posture, pencil grip and control

The programme uses memorable language and physical movements to help children remember how letters are formed. Regular practice helps these movements become automatic.

How can parents help at home?

You can support your child by encouraging them to:

  • Practise the letter formations they have learned at school
  • Use the same letter formation taught in school
  • Sit comfortably with their paper positioned correctly
  • Hold their pencil comfortably and correctly
  • Take their time and focus on forming letters carefully
  • Celebrate progress rather than worrying about perfection

Short, regular practice is usually more effective than long handwriting sessions.

Working together

Using the same approach at home and at school helps children develop strong and consistent handwriting habits. If you are unsure about how a particular letter should be formed, please ask your child's teacher for guidance.

Our aim is for every child to develop handwriting that is confident, fluent, accurate and easy to read.
